as our neighbor beat the wall. i was the dog's howl, you
the luster to which i aspired as all hounds envy endymion
and cry to his lover are we not so fine and loyal? you are

lost to the pregnant space between us, gravid with a hush
conceived by our still tongues, children who are nothing
to you or me though we know their names, press our ear
to night's belly while the other lies sleeping because we
are not, neither you nor i nor the gamins that inhabit us.
